Part 1
Before you start
Rheter lets you run a learning community. You put lessons, quizzes and live sessions in one place. Your members learn together, and a leaderboard and streaks help them keep a steady pace. The place where you do all this is called Rheter Studio.
Words you will see
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| Community | Your group. It has a name, members, and everything you publish for them. |
| Library | Where your videos, audio, files and links live before you share them. It belongs to you, not to one community. |
| Learning path | A course. A path has modules, and a module has lessons. |
| Lesson | One item in a path: a video, audio, file, link, post, live session or quiz. |
| Quiz | A timed set of questions with a score. |
| Member | Anyone who has joined your community. |
| Role | What a person is allowed to do: owner, admin, instructor, moderator or member. |
What you need
- An invitation from the Rheter team. Creators join by invitation. There is no public sign-up for creators yet.
- An email address you can open right now, because we send you a code.
- To be 18 or older.
- A Nigerian bank account in your name, so we can pay you. Setup asks for it even if your first community is free.
- For live sessions, a device with a camera and a microphone.
Plan for about 15 minutes to get from your invitation to an empty community. Studio works best on a laptop, and it stays usable on a phone.
Part 2
Create your account
Ask for an invitation
Go to Rheter for creators and email us a few lines about what you teach and who it is for. If we say yes, we send an invitation to your email.
Open the invitation link
The link works for 72 hours, once, and only for the email address we sent it to. If it has expired, ask us to send a new one.
An expired, used or cancelled link shows “This invitation isn’t available”. That is not your fault. Just ask for a new link.
Set up your account
On “Set up your Rheter Studio account” you will see:
- Email: already filled in. You cannot change it.
- Password: 10 to 128 characters.
- Date of birth: you must be 18 or older. If not, we cannot create the account.
- A list of agreements, such as the Terms, the Privacy Policy and the Community Guidelines. Tick every box. The button stays off until you do.
Then press Create account. If you already have a Rheter account with this email, use that account’s password.
Check your email
We send a 6-digit code. Type it in. It lasts 10 minutes. If it does not arrive, wait a minute and ask for another. Look in your spam folder too. After five wrong tries a code stops working, so ask for a new one.
Add your bank details
The page is called “Where should we send your earnings?”
- Bank: start typing and pick yours from the list.
- Account number: the 10 digits.
- Press Confirm name. We look up the name on the account and show it as “Account name”. Check that it is yours.
- Press Submit for verification. This button only works after the name is confirmed.
If you change the bank or the number, you have to confirm the name again. One bank account can belong to only one creator.
Wait for verification
You will see “Verifying your payout account”. It usually takes under a minute, and the page checks for you. If it takes more than five minutes, we email you. If the check fails, the page tells you why and shows the form again so you can fix it.
Create your first community
When you see “You’re all set”, press Create a community. The next part shows you how.
Signing in later
Go to Creator sign in and use your email and password. If you forget the password, choose Forgot password?. Enter your email, press Send code, type the 6-digit code, then choose a new password.
Part 3
Create your community
Press Create a community in the setup, or open Communities in the side menu and press Create community. Fill in the form:
| Field | What to put | Can you change it later? |
|---|---|---|
| Name | 2 to 80 characters. This is what members see. | Yes |
| Handle | 3 to 32 letters, numbers or underscores. It becomes your community’s web address. | No. Choose with care. |
| Description | Up to 2000 characters. Say who it is for and what they will learn. | Yes |
| Category | Up to 40 characters, such as “Photography”. | Yes |
| Cover image | Optional. Wide, at least 1200 × 630. Lists show the middle square, so keep the important part in the centre. | Yes. You can replace it but not remove it. |
| Currency | NGN, GHS, ZAR, KES or USD. It sets the currency members pay in. | No. Choose it now. |
| Who can join | See below. | Yes |
Who can join
| Choice | What happens |
|---|---|
| Open | Anyone with your link can join straight away. |
| Invite only | People need an invite link or code from you. This is the default. |
| Approval | People ask to join and you say yes or no. |
| Paid | People subscribe to join. After you create the community, you set the price in Billing. Read “Charge and get paid” first. |
Press the create button and you land on your community’s home page. Most creators can run up to 3 communities. If you hit the limit, Studio says so, and you can email us.
Part 4
Find your way around
The side menu has two groups. The first group belongs to the community you are in. The second belongs to you.
| Menu item | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Home | A summary, plus a checklist called “Get your community started”. |
| Members | Who has joined, join requests, invite links and free access. |
| Feed | Posts and announcements. |
| Spaces | Rooms that organise your posts and chat. |
| Learn | Learning paths, modules and lessons. |
| Quizzes | Your quizzes and your question bank. |
| Live | Live sessions. |
| Campaigns | Messages to all or part of your community. |
| Analytics | What members watched, scored and did. |
| Moderation | Reports, rules and appeals. |
| Billing | Your price, payments and subscribers. |
| Settings | Community details, team and preferences. |
| Communities, Library, Webinar credits, Payouts, Portfolio | The account group. These work across all your communities. |
The checklist on Home is a good first week: publish your first video, create your first quiz, invite your first members, schedule a live session, and add a second admin. Only owners and admins see it.
If you run more than one community, use the switcher at the top of the menu to move between them.
Part 5
Add videos and files
Open Library. It holds everything you have uploaded or linked, across all your communities. It has four sections: videos, audio, files and links. The main button changes with the section: Upload video, Upload audio, Upload file or Add link.
Upload a video
Press Upload video
Type a Title (up to 200 characters) and pick your Video file. A video can be up to 4 hours long or 30 GB.
Let it upload
Keep the page open. If it stops, open the same video again and pick the same file. It carries on where it stopped.
Wait for “Ready”
After the upload, the video shows “Processing…”. Long videos take longer. When it says “Ready”, it is ready to share. If it fails, press Retry upload.
Publish it to a community
See “Share it with members” below.
Audio, files and links
- Audio: MP3, M4A, WAV or AAC, up to 500 MB.
- Files: PDF, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, ZIP, PNG or JPG, up to 200 MB.
- Links: a YouTube or Vimeo video, or a Spotify podcast episode. Paste the full share link. Set it to Public or Unlisted on that site, or members will not be able to play it.
Share it with members
Uploading does not show anything to members. Choose Publish on the item, then pick the communities where it should appear. For each one, choose who can see it:
- Members only: people who have joined.
- Public preview: anyone can see it, even before joining. Good for a free taster.
You can only publish into communities where your role allows it. A video that is still processing will show to members once it is ready.
Part 6
Build a learning path
A path is a course. It has modules (chapters), and each module has lessons. Open Learn.
Press New path
Give it a Title, and if you like a Description and a cover image. Switch on Issue a certificate on completion if you want members to earn one. The path starts as a draft, so nobody sees it yet.
Add a module
Press Add module and give it a title, such as “Week 1”. You can drag modules and lessons to change their order.
Add lessons
In a module, press Add a lesson. You pick from what you have already published into this community: a video, audio, file, link, post, live session or quiz. A quiz must be published first.
Publish the path
Use the status menu on the path and choose Published. Members can see it now.
Release lessons over time
On a module, choose Drip rule. It decides when the module opens:
- Days after a member joins: the module opens a set number of days after each person joins.
- On a fixed date: the module opens for everyone on the same day.
Make people earn the next lesson
On a lesson, choose Prerequisites. A lesson can wait until the member has either finished another lesson, or scored at least a number you choose (0 to 100) on a quiz.
To see how members are doing, open the path and press Progress. It lists each member, how many lessons they finished and when they were last active. When a member finishes every lesson in a path with certificates on, they get a certificate with a link they can share.
Part 7
Set a quiz
Open Quizzes and press New quiz. A quiz starts as a draft.
1. Choose the settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Title and description | What members see. Title is 3 to 200 characters. |
| Mode: Live | Runs at a set time. If you switch on “Synchronous”, everyone starts together. |
| Mode: Open window | Members can take it any time between the time it opens and the time it closes. |
| Mode: Practice | For learning. Members can try it again, and it does not count towards the leaderboard. |
| Mode: Recurring | Comes back daily, weekly or monthly. |
| Timer | “Whole quiz” gives one clock. “Per question” gives each question its own. Set the time in seconds. |
| Pass mark % | Optional, from 0 to 100. |
| Show results | Right after submitting, or when the window closes. |
| Negative marking | Wrong answers lose points. |
| Counts toward the leaderboard | Switch it off for quizzes that should not affect rankings. |
2. Add questions
Questions can be single choice, multiple select, true or false, or short text. Choose how to add them:
- Write a question: type it. Add an explanation, points, a difficulty and topic tags. Members read the explanation after they finish.
- Add from pool: pick from your Question bank, or from questions other teachers in your community have shared.
- Draw N from tags: tell Studio the topic tags and how many, and it picks that many questions for you. It picks once, while you build the quiz. Every member gets the same questions.
- Import questions from CSV: up to 500 rows and 2 MB, all or nothing. If any row is wrong, nothing is imported and Studio tells you which rows to fix.
A CSV needs these columns: question_type, prompt, option_a to option_f, correct, explanation, points, difficulty, tags. In correct, write the text of the right option, not its letter. For multiple select, separate the right answers with a semicolon.
3. Add a schedule
Press Add schedule and set when the quiz Opens and Closes. You need at least one schedule before you can publish.
4. Publish
Press Publish. If something is missing, such as an explanation on a question, Studio lists what to fix.
When a question is wrong
Open the quiz and go to Voids. Choose Fix the key to correct the right answer, or Void the question to remove it. Write a reason of at least 10 characters. Members see it. Everyone’s score is worked out again.
See how it went
Results shows participation, average time, pass rate and how scores spread. Attempts lists each try. Anomalies lists attempts that look unusual, such as a perfect score in far too little time, or the same answers from several accounts. These are flags to review, not proof of cheating.
Quiz points feed the community leaderboard. Each month is a new season. Admins and instructors do not appear on it.
Part 8
Go live
Open Live and press Schedule a session.
Set it up
- Session type: “Broadcast” means you stream and members watch. “Interactive” means members can join you on stage. Interactive is only shown when it is available to you, and the type cannot change after you save.
- Title, Description and an optional Cover image.
- Starts at: it must be in the future.
- Chat slow mode (seconds): 0 to 300. It limits how often one person can post.
- Record this session: on by default. Publish the recording automatically puts it in front of members when it is ready.
Press Schedule session. Members can say they are coming, and they get a reminder shortly before the start.
On the day
Open the session
Find it under Upcoming and open it. This is your host console.
Open the waiting room
Press Open the waiting room. Members who arrive early wait there.
Go live from this device
Go to the Stream section and press Start broadcasting. Allow the camera and microphone when asked. There is nothing to install.
Run the session
Use the console sections: Whiteboard, Polls, Q&A, Chat and Attendance. Polls open once you are live. In Q&A, mark each question as answered or dismiss it.
End it
Press End session. The recording appears in your Library after it has processed.
Attendance shows how many people came, how many times they joined and how long they watched on average. Members never see these numbers.
Interactive sessions
In an interactive session you join the room as host, and you can add up to 3 co-hosts. Owners, admins and instructors can be co-hosts. Interactive sessions are always recorded. They are paid for by the creator, either with Paystack or with a Webinar credit. If a session does not go live, you get a credit back. Credits never turn into cash. The length and the number of attendees depend on the size you buy, and Studio shows the limits when you schedule. This feature is not on for every account yet.
Part 9
Post and organise
Open Feed and press New post. Choose a Type (Post or Announcement) and a Space. Write the body, and turn on Preview to see how it will look. The body supports Markdown formatting. You can attach up to 10 images or voice notes, but you cannot change attachments after the post is created.
- Visibility: members only or public preview.
- Save draft: keep it for later. Find it under Drafts.
- Publish at: pick a date and time to schedule the post.
Spaces organise your community. Press New space and choose a kind: Channel (chat) for conversation, or Content section for posts. Give it a name and a short web-friendly slug. Owners and admins can create spaces.
Part 10
Bring people in
Open Members. This is where people come in, and where you look after them.
Invite people
Press Invite members. You have two choices:
- Create invite link: choose the Role granted, how many people can use it (leave blank for no limit) and when it expires (leave blank for never). Share the link anywhere.
- Invite by email: paste up to 200 addresses at once.
If you change your mind, press Revoke. The link stops working, and people who already joined keep their access.
What members see
When someone opens your link, they see a preview first: your community’s name, description, cover and a few lessons. Then they sign in or create an account, and press Accept invite. If your community needs approval, they press Request to join and can add a message. If it is invite only, they can type an invite code.
Look after your members
- Requests: approve or reject people who asked to join.
- Access: give someone free access (Comp) or time-limited access (Trial), and take it back with Revoke. Write a reason. Only you see it.
- Open a member to see when they joined, their quizzes and their rank. From there you can change their role, remove them, or go to moderation.
Part 11
Add your team
Give people only the access they need.
| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | Everything: billing and revenue, deleting the community, and handing it over. |
| Admin | Publish, write quizzes, host live sessions, send campaigns, moderate, see analytics, manage members and change settings. No billing or revenue. |
| Instructor | Publish content, write quizzes and host live sessions. |
| Moderator | Handle reports and rules. |
| Member | Learn, join in and compete. |
To add someone to your team, send them an invite link with the right role, or open an existing member and choose Change role. You can also change roles under Settings then Team. Only an owner can create another owner. To hand over the community, an owner goes to Settings, then Ownership, chooses an active member as the New owner, and becomes an admin.
Part 12
Charge and get paid
Charge for your community
Choose Paid under “Who can join”. Members then pay a subscription with a card, in the currency you chose when you created the community. You set the price yourself:
Make sure the community is Paid
Open Settings and check Who can join says Paid. If you change it, press save.
Open Billing
Only owners see it. A paid community with no price shows the card “Set your price”.
Choose a price and how often to charge
Type the Price in your community’s currency, such as 2000 or 19.99. Under Charge choose how often members pay:
- every day, every week or every month
- every 3 months or every 6 months
- every year
Review and save
Press Review price, check the amount, then press Set price. Members can subscribe straight away.
Rheter sets a lowest and a highest price for each currency. If your price is outside that range, Studio says so and you can try another amount. Until you set a price, members see “Subscriptions for this community aren’t set up yet”.
Renewals are charged to the member’s saved card. If a renewal fails, we try again, and the member keeps access for 7 days while that happens.
Where your money goes
- Open Payouts to see or update your bank account. You have one payout account, shared by all your communities.
- Rheter keeps a percentage of each payment. The exact figure is on Billing, under Overview, as “Rheter’s take rate”.
- Payouts are estimated to reach your bank on the next business day.
Keep track
Only owners see these pages. Open Billing in the community.
- Payments: every payment and whether it was successful, failed, refunded or pending.
- Subscribers: who is active, not renewing, cancelled or completed.
- Refund payment: leave the amount blank to refund everything left, and write a reason.
- Analytics, then Revenue: monthly recurring revenue, paying subscribers, churn, and revenue by month. Members you gave free or trial access are counted separately.
Money pages are not saved on your device, so they always show fresh numbers.
Part 13
Send messages
Campaigns lets owners and admins message all or part of a community. Press New campaign.
Write the message
A Title (up to 120 characters), a Body, an Email subject, and an optional image.
Choose channels
Push notification, email, or both.
Choose who gets it
- Everyone, or active members
- Lapsed members (quiet for 7, 14 or 30 days)
- Members who took a quiz, or missed one
- Top performers, or new members
- Members at a certain place in a path
- Specific members you pick
Choose when
Send now, at a set time, or at a set time in each member’s own timezone (for example 09:00 for everyone).
Save or send
Press Save draft to come back later. A scheduled campaign can be cancelled before it goes out.
There are limits so your members do not get tired of you: 3 campaigns a day and 10 a week for each community. The Urgent switch is for rare things that cannot wait, and you get 2 a month. A campaign over the limit waits and goes out later. Open View report on any campaign to see how many were sent and opened.
Part 14
See what is working
Open Analytics (owners and admins). Each panel says when its numbers were last updated, so a small delay is normal.
| Section | It answers |
|---|---|
| Home | How is my community doing? Active members, activity, new and lost members, and the join funnel. |
| Content | Which videos do people watch, and where do they stop? |
| Quizzes | Which quizzes and questions are too hard or too easy? |
| Topic mastery | Which topics are members weakest in, overall and one by one? |
| Retention | Do people who joined in a given week keep coming back? |
| At-risk members | Who has gone quiet and might leave? |
| Notification performance | Were my campaigns delivered and opened? |
| Revenue | How much am I earning? (Owners only.) |
Portfolio in the account group puts all your communities side by side: members, at-risk members and, for owners, monthly revenue.
Part 15
Keep it safe
Members can report any post, comment or message. Reports land in Moderation, in the queue. You can also set rules that act on their own. Everyone on Rheter follows the Community Guidelines. Your own rules sit on top of them.
- Queue: reports, automatic hits and quiz anomalies. Open one and choose Take action: a warning, deleting the content, muting someone for a number of hours, removing them, or banning them. You must write a reason. If the member appeals, they see it.
- Appeals: members can ask for a decision to be reviewed. You approve or deny.
- Actions: every action taken in your community. You can reverse one.
- Audit: a record that nobody can edit.
- Automod: rules that run for you. You can block or flag messages that contain certain words, limit links from new accounts, or limit how fast someone can post. Choose “Block the message” or “Flag for review”.
Reports about a child’s safety are treated as urgent and are escalated.
Part 16
Community settings
Open Settings. Owners and admins can change these.
- General: name, description, category, cover and who can join. The handle stays as it is.
- Preferences: whether direct messages are for admins only or open to all members, whether chat is on, and who can see the leaderboard (public, members only or hidden).
- Team and Ownership: see “Add your team”.
Part 17
When something goes wrong
My invitation link says it is not available
It has expired (after 72 hours), been used, or been cancelled. Email us and ask for a new one.
The 6-digit code did not arrive
Check spam. Wait a minute, then ask for a new code. Only the newest code works, and each code lasts 10 minutes.
“Confirm name” does not work
Check that you picked the right bank and typed all 10 digits. The name must come back before you can submit.
My bank details failed, or are taking a long time
Studio shows the reason and the form again. Fix it and resubmit. If it still fails, or you wait more than a few minutes, email us. Remember that one bank account cannot be used by two creators.
I cannot create a community
You may have reached your limit, or setup is not finished. Studio sends you back to setup if a step is missing.
My video is stuck on Processing
Big files take time. If it fails, press Retry upload. After 30 minutes Studio says it is still processing. Email us if it does not move.
Members cannot see my lesson
Check four things. Is the item published into this community? Is the video “Ready”? Is the path published? Is the module still waiting on a drip rule or prerequisite?
Members cannot subscribe
You have not set the price yet. Open Billing and set it. See “Charge and get paid”. The community also has to be set to Paid.
Studio says my price is not in the range
Each currency has a lowest and a highest price. Try a different amount. If you think the range is wrong for your community, email us.
I set the wrong price
A price cannot be changed once it is set. Email us and tell us what happened, and we will tell you what we can do.
I cannot change a quiz
It is locked because members have taken it. You can still fix a wrong question with Voids.
A menu item is missing
Your role does not include it. Ask the owner to change your role.
I forgot my password
On the sign-in page choose Forgot password?, enter your email, and follow the code.
Still stuck? Email support@rheter.com from the address you signed up with. A person will reply. You can also visit Help and contact.
